SustainabilitySustainability is a fundamental pilar of who we are and of everything we do. Our aim is to be recognised for our corporate responsibility which includes our products (natural and organic), care for the environment, respect in our workplace, and a communication promoting consumption of wine in moderation.
At Bodegas Chivite, we have cared for our vineyards and our wines since 1647. Mr. Julián Chivite Marco was, in 1967, co-founder and creator of the Regulatory Board of the “Denominación de Origen Navarra” and the beginner of the viticulture project in the “Señorío de Arínzano”. Back in 1997, we began our relationship with WWF/Adena to undertake the challenging project of a vineyard development based on “Total Quality”, beginning with an environmentally-concerned management of the agriculture and finishing with the quality of materials and processes in the winery. Our aim is that this project will serve as a model for the agricultural sector and that it will increase awareness of the need to achieve a more sustainable and better integrated management of agricultural production. This project is based upon four action lines: the conservation and restoration of the natural environment, the introduction of organic viticulture with a low-environmental impact, integrated pest control and the use of a naturalised wetland to purify water from the winery.
We believe that this project is essential since over the last 30 years, intensive agriculture has caused several and diverse impacts on the environment. This intensification is reflected by certain indicators, such as the continuous and vertiginous increase in the use of fertilisers, pesticides and machinery. In Spain for example, the expenditure on pesticides increased from €24 million in the beginning of the seventies to €563 million in 1998. Another significant fact is that the use of fertilisers has increased from 70kg/ha in the beginning of the seventies to an average 115kg/ha in the five years between 1987 and 1991.
In our wines, our aim is to express all the special potential of the natural processes without altering them artificially, either in the vineyard or in the winery: avoiding intensive agriculture (irrigation, massive use of inputs,…), limited productions and in many cases recovering traditional and manual practices used in our family before but that had fallen in disuse (defoliated, pruning in green, vintage in green, vintage selected manually, …).
At Bodegas Chivite, our aim is to encourage building a fair workplace environment that promotes respect for the individuals, and the integration of women and disabled. Additionally, we are committed to minimising the risk of accidents, injuries, and exposure to health risks by creating a safe and healthy workplace. These commitments are an integrated part of who we are and essential to our sustainability.
As an active member of the Spanish Wine Federation, from Bodegas Chivite, we actively work to implement the pan-European programme of Wine in Moderation to promote moderation in wine consumption. For further information about this programme, click below.
